Does magnesium help anxiety and stress?
Magnesium may modestly improve self-reported anxiety in some people who are already vulnerable to anxiety, but the evidence is not strong enough to establish treatment of an anxiety disorder. Systematic reviews found several positive small trials alongside major differences in populations, formulations, amounts, durations, and study quality.

Magnesium oxide can improve symptoms and bowel-movement outcomes in some adults with chronic idiopathic constipation. The principal randomized evidence used 1.5 g per day for 28 days, but that product amount is not 1.5 g of elemental magnesium and should not be converted into a general self-treatment dose.

Randomized-trial meta-analyses reported modest average reductions in blood pressure and fasting plasma glucose, while prospective cohorts associated higher dietary magnesium intake with lower type 2 diabetes risk. The observational association does not prove causation, and the trial effects do not establish magnesium as a stand-alone treatment.

Magnesium forms differ in the compound paired with magnesium, which can change elemental-magnesium delivery, solubility, and absorption. On Supplement Facts, the declared magnesium amount is elemental magnesium rather than the weight of the full magnesium compound. In a small acute human comparison, citrate was more soluble and more bioavailable than oxide; the supporting evidence did not directly compare magnesium glycinate.

For nonpregnant adults, the magnesium RDA ranges from 310 to 420 mg per day from all sources depending on age and sex; pregnancy and lactation use separate age-specific reference values. The adult 350 mg per day upper limit is different: it applies only to magnesium from dietary supplements and medications. On a supplement label, compare these references with the elemental magnesium amount in Supplement Facts, not the weight of the whole magnesium compound.
